Cami Stinson and the 'Round Town Riot
Oklahoma
Cami's passion for western swing, big band, jazz and country music has inspired her to create her own original blend of these great American styles.
Growing up in Sulphur, Okla., Cami was immersed in country music and western swing. Benny Kubiak, former fiddler for Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, was Cami's first fiddle teacher. Cami credits him for igniting her love of Western Swing.
Cami sang throughout her childhood, performing mostly on the stages of Opry theaters like the McSwain Theater, the Oklahoma Opry, the Johhny High's Show in Arlington, Texas, the Main Street Opry in Dennison, Texas, and the Grapevine Opry.
Cami received numerous honors for her classical vocal performances while in high school, such as her membership in the All-State Chorus and the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute Chorus.
After graduating from Sulphur High School, Cami attended Oklahoma City University as a vocal performance major. She left after one semester realizing western swing and big band were the genres that she truly longed to perform.
Cami then went to South Plains College in Levelland, Texas to study commercial music. There she performed in a western swing ensemble led by guitarist Joe Carr. She also starred in the monthly "Thursday Nite Live" television broadcast led by Cary Banks.
Currently finishing her senior year at Oklahoma State University, Cami is studying public relations (journalism and broadcasting) in order to be better equipped to deal with the promotional, technical and communications aspects of the music business. She plans to graduate in May 2007.
Her main influences are: Bob Wills, Ella Fitzgerald, Patsy Cline, Benny Kubiak, her current fiddle coach Greg Burgess, and fiddlers Bobby Boatright and Johnny Gimble.
